Thanks to Freeview, there are now tens of channels forever showing repeats of programmes that remind us of why we used to be obsessed by television. It was on Dave last week that I tucked in to a repeat of Question of Sport – back in the hilarious days when Ally McCoist was a captain.
I’m a fan of quiz shows. I’m remotely intelligent, so they are quite entertaining. One show I’ve not got my head round is University Challenge, perhaps owing to the fact that 95% of my brain is reserved for sports knowledge – I couldn’t give two hoots who the wife of Charles I was, or any of the other questions asked by Jeremy Paxman.
It got me thinking though, are there any sports quiz shows out there for the average Joe? Such as University Challenge, but perhaps a sports version?
I’d fancy my chances if there was.
As it is, my only chance of showing off my sports knowledge is at the odd pub quiz, or indeed when I was on holiday in Cyprus in 2007. After drawing a quiz show with another team, there was a sports tie break question. I was nominated by my friends and took to the stage, and answered the question correctly – Hamburg SV was the answer, the question was which German club did Kevin Keegan play for.
I won my team a fish bowl and free drinks – useless to me, as I’m not much of a drinker!
